Our country is beginning to reckon with its history of discrimination against so many communities, including people who are Black, Indigenous, Latino, Asian-American, female, Muslim, LGBTQ, low-income, and disabled. Mother Jones is no exception to the need for introspection, and is committed to becoming a better organization. We recognize our success depends on building and maintaining a staff that reflects the diversity of our society, respecting and rewarding the perspectives and contributions of each staff member, and redressing past inequities.Mother Jones aims to create an organization where:

  • Everyone feels safe to bring their best selves;
  • Everyone feels they belong; and
  • Everyone knows success is based on how they contribute.

Mother Jones is working to make those goals a reality by:

  • Conducting inclusive staff recruiting and hiring;
  • Training managers on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) principles;
  • Building relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic-Serving Institutions; and
  • Implementing DEIB benchmarks for the entire organization.

Below are more details about our efforts to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.





Recruiting: Mother Jones’ recruiting process is designed to ensure a more diverse group of job candidates, and staff who interview them. Of candidates who receive phone interviews – the first step in the hiring process – 30 percent of them must be people of color and 30 percent must be women. Separately, all interview panels must include at least one staff member who is female and one who identifies as a person of color. Both arrangements are monitored by Mother Jones’ Diversity Committee.

Pay Equity: In an effort to be transparent with job candidates, all postings include a minimum salary. In addition, Mother Jones hired an outside company in 2021 to conduct a pay equity audit and is using those results to address pay inequities and prevent future occurrences.

DEI Training: To ensure the principles of DEI are implemented in the workplace, all managers are required to participate in a DEI training conducted by The Management Center, a non-profit organization largely focused on leading such seminars around the world.

Fellowships: One of the most successful ways Mother Jones has diversified its newsroom over the last few years is through its fellowship program. Since 20xx, xx of xx fellows identified as people of color; and in many cases, the 12-month, fully-paid position leads to full-time employment with the organization.





Healthcare: We cover the entire premium for health coverage for staff and their dependents; we cover travel and lodging expenses for an employee or dependent who must travel out of state for an abortion because it is illegal in their state of residence; and we cover gender affirming surgery for employees and dependents who are transitioning.

Juneteenth: Beginning in 2022, when it was first recognized by the federal government as a holiday, Mother Jones observes Juneteenth each year.

Union Membership: Since the 1980s, Mother Jones has been a unionized organization, where non-managerial positions are represented by a collective bargaining agreement that sets wages and benefits.
