Hillary Clinton Shuts Down Donald Trump’s Conspiracy Theories About Her Health

Let’s see him open a jar of pickles.

Recently, Donald Trump has combined a popular right-wing conspiracy theory with good old-fashioned misogyny by questioning Hillary Clinton’s “strength and stamina,” insinuating that the 68-year-old former secretary of state is concealing the true state of her ill-health to advance her presidential ambitions.

“To defeat crime and radical Islamic terrorism in our country, to win trade in our country, you need tremendous physical and mental strength and stamina,” Trump told a crowd in Wisconsin last week. “Hillary Clinton doesn’t have that strength and stamina.”

On Monday, Clinton appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to poke fun at and dispense with, the newly-revived rumors about her physical frailty. She even got in a few digs at Trump, expressing her wish to be running against someone who was actually qualified to be president, instead of a reality TV star.

“I don’t think we’ve ever been confronted with somebody who we see right now in the midst of this election as unqualified and temperamentally unfit,” Clinton said.

Kimmel then whipped out a jar of pickles, challenging Clinton to prove she has at least strength, if not stamina, by opening the jar.

Fortunately, she succeeded.

GREAT JOURNALISM, SLOW FUNDRAISING

Our team has been on fire lately—publishing sweeping, one-of-a-kind investigations, ambitious, groundbreaking projects, and even releasing “the holy shit documentary of the year.” And that’s on top of protecting free and fair elections and standing up to bullies and BS when others in the media don’t.

Yet, we just came up pretty short on our first big fundraising campaign since Mother Jones and the Center for Investigative Reporting joined forces.

So, two things:

1) If you value the journalism we do but haven’t pitched in over the last few months, please consider doing so now—we urgently need a lot of help to make up for lost ground.

2) If you’re not ready to donate but you’re interested enough in our work to be reading this, please consider signing up for our free Mother Jones Daily newsletter to get to know us and our reporting better. Maybe once you do, you’ll see it’s something worth supporting.
