John Oliver Demands Americans Fight Against Normalizing Donald Trump

“He’s abnormal. He’s a human ‘What Is Wrong With This Picture?'”

As Americans continue to reel in the shocking reality that Donald Trump will become the 45th president of the United States, John Oliver dedicated the season finale of Last Week Tonight on Sunday to unpacking the election results and providing some guidance on how people can fight against some of the president-elect’s most alarming policies moving forward. The HBO host specifically warned viewers to resist the impulse to normalize the former reality star and “Klan-backed misogynist internet troll.”

“It is going to be easy for things to start feeling normal, especially if you are someone who is not directly impacted by his actions,” Oliver said. “So keep reminding yourself, this is not normal.” He then repeated a number of shocking campaign proposals Trump pledged to fulfill once in office, including the dismantling of Obamacare, the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants, and much more.

“He’s abnormal. He’s a human ‘What Is Wrong With This Picture?'” Oliver added. “So giving him a chance, in the sense of not speaking out immediately against policies he has proposed, is dangerous.”

Oliver also leveled some harsh criticism at the media for enabling Trump’s candidacy and implored Americans to combat the wave of fake news that helped the former reality television star get elected.

GREAT JOURNALISM, SLOW FUNDRAISING

Our team has been on fire lately—publishing sweeping, one-of-a-kind investigations, ambitious, groundbreaking projects, and even releasing “the holy shit documentary of the year.” And that’s on top of protecting free and fair elections and standing up to bullies and BS when others in the media don’t.

Yet, we just came up pretty short on our first big fundraising campaign since Mother Jones and the Center for Investigative Reporting joined forces.

So, two things:

1) If you value the journalism we do but haven’t pitched in over the last few months, please consider doing so now—we urgently need a lot of help to make up for lost ground.

2) If you’re not ready to donate but you’re interested enough in our work to be reading this, please consider signing up for our free Mother Jones Daily newsletter to get to know us and our reporting better. Maybe once you do, you’ll see it’s something worth supporting.
