Dubbed “Frankenfood” by the Pure Food Campaign, Calgene’s Flavr Savr tomato could be the first of hundreds of genetically altered foods to reach supermarket shelves. Boycotters fear that genetic tinkering in plants and animals could trigger harmful environmental reactions and may be hazardous to human health.
Started in 1992, the campaign claims 150,000 consumers, 100 food manufacturers and distributors, and 2,000 chefs. A Calgene spokesperson says that the FDA’s approval will show there are no risks. Besides, he adds, “Consumers have zero awareness of Jeremy Rifkin”–the brains behind the boycott.
