A huge expanse of Idaho’s idyllic Owyhee Canyonlands may soon become a bombing range. Under a plan developed and pushed by Gov. Cecil Andrus, the U.S. Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management would hand approximately 20,000 acres of land over to the state, which would in turn lease it to the 366th Wing fighter pilots of Idaho’s Mountain Home Air Force Base. Opposition to the plan has brought together an unlikely coalition of big-game hunters, Native Americans, environmentalists, federal officials, and some of Andrus’ own state offices. The contested swath of canyon-carved high desert, sacred ground to Shoshone-Paiute Indians, contains myriad endangered plants, animals, and wetlands, and several hundred archaeological sites.

Fact:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and billionaires wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2024 demands.
