Women of the world, unite!

Mar. 8, 2000

NEWS WE CAN USE reports that the aim of the March 8 Women’s Global Strike, called by the National Women’s Council of Ireland, is to bring attention to the mountains of unpaid and underpaid work done by women.

The disparity isn’t exactly subtle: Organizers say women do two-thirds of the world’s work but take home only 5 percent of the world’s income. Strikers in different countries hope for results ranging from a paid holiday for homemakers to more flexible work hours to help women in 9-to-5 jobs cope with the demands of child rearing.
