Dishes will sit in the sink in Burkina Faso and dirty clothes will pile up in Argentina today as women in 50 countries go on strike. NEWS WE CAN USE reports that the aim of the March 8 Women’s Global Strike, called by the National Women’s Council of Ireland, is to bring attention to the mountains of unpaid and underpaid work done by women.

The disparity isn’t exactly subtle: Organizers say women do two-thirds of the world’s work but take home only 5 percent of the world’s income. Strikers in different countries hope for results ranging from a paid holiday for homemakers to more flexible work hours to help women in 9-to-5 jobs cope with the demands of child rearing.
