Russians invent … bottles?

What if every Chinese restaurant suddenly had to start paying royalties to a company that claimed it had just invented cardboard cartons? What if bottlers of beer, juice, water, and soft drinks had to fork over 0.5 percent of their total income to some guys who sauntered over to the government patent office, ponied up a few bucks, and staked out a patent on bottles? In Russia, they’re finding out.

The CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR reports that a little-known Moscow company called Intellekt recently successfully applied for a patent on “glass containers,” and now claims that bottlers, especially brewers, owe them royalties for using their “invention.”

Taking advantage of Russia’s fledgling intellectual property laws to claim ownership of a product that’s been around for years apparently wasn’t much of a challenge. “The drawings that were submitted described a particular kind of geometric curve, detailing a difference in thickness between inside and outside edges,” justifies an official from the patent bureau. “It looked new.”

DONALD TRUMP & DEMOCRACY

Mother Jones was founded to do journalism differently. We stand for justice and democracy. We reject false equivalence. We go after stories others don’t. We’re a nonprofit newsroom, because the kind of truth-telling investigations we do doesn’t happen under corporate ownership.

And we need your support like never before, to fight back against the existential threats American democracy faces. Fundraising for nonprofit media is always a challenge, and we need all hands on deck right now. We have no cushion; we leave it all on the field.

It’s reader support that enables Mother Jones to report the facts that are too difficult, expensive, or inconvenient for other news outlets to uncover. Please help with a donation today if you can—even a few bucks will make a real difference. A monthly gift would be incredible.
