There have been more grizzly bear deaths this year in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem than any other year since the bears were listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1975.

Hunters, who are permitted to kill black bears during the hunting season, frequently mistake the much larger grizzly for legal prey, according to the ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS NETWORK.

Environmentalists are angry at lax enforcement of protections for the threatened bear. Efforts continue to have the grizzly’s status changed from threatened to endangered.
