S&M Person of the Day

Polls and perceived wisdom notwithstanding, Bush keeps winning and Friday’s warrantless surveillance act revealed how Bush does it. He’s actually smart. He knows the truth. The Democrats, including purported tough guy Jim Webb, can be easily and instantly “masochized.” Say the magic words “Soft on Terror” and they happily fold and beg for mercy. Imagine giving totally unchecked e-mail surveillance power, after all, to Alberto Gonzales. ALBERTO GONZALES! Is there anything left to say? I guess nothing except that satire is dead. And it has welts.

FACT:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and the wealthy wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2020 demands.
