Dewey Defeats Truman: SF Chronicle’s Bay Bridge Edition

Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters.

Here in the Bay Area, we take our earthquake retrofitting seriously: Hence the Labor Day weekend closing of the Bay Bridge for a crucial step in the ongoing replacement of the eastern span, and the announcement last night that allĀ 260,000 cars that use the bridge on a typical day would have to find other ways to commute this morning due to a newly discoveredĀ crack in a steel link.Ā Given the new crack, I was expecting to have to forsake my usual cushy carpool ride from Berkeley to the Mother Jones office in downtown San Francisco for a long, crowded, and expensive train ride today, but when IĀ woke up this morningĀ I checked the news on the computer and, just like that, the bridge workers had beaten the odds and the bridge was operational. All it took was 70 hours of continuous work.

Too bad the print edition of the San Francisco Chronicle couldn’t keep up with the news. Millions of people in the Bay Area woke up this morning wondering about the Bay Bridge and the area’s largest daily, with a daily circulation of 312,408, got it wrong.

Ironically, IĀ saw this in the newspaper box while waiting in the carpool line for a ride over the Bay Bridge. Ouch.

GREAT JOURNALISM, SLOW FUNDRAISING

Our team has been on fire latelyā€”publishing sweeping, one-of-a-kind investigations, ambitious, groundbreaking projects, and even releasing ā€œthe holy shit documentary of the year.ā€ And thatā€™s on top of protecting free and fair elections and standing up to bullies and BS when others in the media donā€™t.

Yet, we just came up pretty short on our first big fundraising campaign since Mother Jones and the Center for Investigative Reporting joined forces.

So, two things:

1) If you value the journalism we do but havenā€™t pitched in over the last few months, please consider doing so nowā€”we urgently need a lot of help to make up for lost ground.

2) If youā€™re not ready to donate but youā€™re interested enough in our work to be reading this, please consider signing up for our free Mother Jones Daily newsletter to get to know us and our reporting better. Maybe once you do, youā€™ll see itā€™s something worth supporting.
