Watch John Oliver’s Emotional Response to the Orlando Shooting: “This Pain Is So Familiar”

He urged viewers to remember the hundreds of people who waited in line to donate blood in the wake of the attack.

John Oliver took a moment at the top of his show on Sunday to address the devastating mass shooting that took place inside a gay nightclub in Orlando just hours before.

“It’s still early and details are still emerging and right now this just hurts,” Oliver said. “And the worst thing is—this pain is so familiar. In Paris last November, terrorists seem to target places symbolizing everything that is wonderful about France: culture, music, restaurants. In Orlando early this morning, the gunman attacked a Latin night at a gay club in the theme park capital of the world.”

Instead of focusing on the “dipshit terrorist” behind Sunday’s tragedy, the Last Week Host Tonight urged viewers to watch a clip of the hundreds of people who lined up to donate blood in the wake of the attack to remember that the “terrorist dipshit is vastly outnumbered.”

DONALD TRUMP & DEMOCRACY

Mother Jones was founded to do journalism differently. We stand for justice and democracy. We reject false equivalence. We go after stories others don’t. We’re a nonprofit newsroom, because the kind of truth-telling investigations we do doesn’t happen under corporate ownership.

And we need your support like never before, to fight back against the existential threats American democracy faces. Fundraising for nonprofit media is always a challenge, and we need all hands on deck right now. We have no cushion; we leave it all on the field.

It’s reader support that enables Mother Jones to report the facts that are too difficult, expensive, or inconvenient for other news outlets to uncover. Please help with a donation today if you can—even a few bucks will make a real difference. A monthly gift would be incredible.
